The addicted brain: How processed foods hijack reward pathways
The evolving understanding of addiction now includes behaviors such as compulsive eating, particularly in relation to ultra-processed foods (UPFs). These foods, characterized by high levels of refined sugars and saturated fats, may provoke neurobiological reactions similar to those seen in substance use disorders. This article investigates the hypothesis that the mechanisms underlying food addiction are comparable to those found in conventional substance addiction, supported by DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and contemporary neuropharmacological research.
Both animal and human studies indicate that the excessive intake of highly palatable foods can result in behaviors typically associated with addiction, including bingeing, cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. These behaviors are linked to significant alterations in the dopaminergic system, particularly within the mesolimbic reward pathway. Neuroimaging and molecular studies reveal that chronic consumption of UPFs modifies dopaminergic signaling, hampers prefrontal control, and activates stress response pathways, which in turn reinforces compulsive eating behaviors.
The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) and its adaptations for pediatric populations serve as essential tools to identify food addiction in both clinical and research environments. Additionally, the similarities between binge eating disorder and substance dependence illustrate shared neurobehavioral mechanisms, underscoring the complexity of these conditions. Given the rising obesity rates, especially in communities with limited access to healthy food options, comprehending the pharmacological foundations of food addiction is increasingly vital.
This review calls for a re-evaluation of UPFs as potentially addictive substances, advocating for comprehensive therapeutic approaches and policy reforms aimed at reducing their adverse effects on public health.
