Important flavonoids and their role as a therapeutic agent
Flavonoids were found to exert several beneficial impacts on health, such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antiviral and cardio-protective effects. Flavonoids may represent a feasible bioactive intervention, and their effects depend on the type of flavonoid, its bioavailability and mechanism of action. In this study by Ullah et al. (2020), the authors highlight the current findings regarding the beneficial effects of individual flavonoids, isolation and synthesis methods, and currently available animal and human models. The gut-brain axis has mainly been studied in relation to bacteria; commensal fungi have received less attention. Dysbiosis of the gut bacterial microbiota has been linked to depression in children and adolescents, but the mycobiota’s contribution has not been examined. In this study by Hao et al. (2023), 145 children and adolescents with depression and […]
Dietary intake of polyphenols and depression Godos et al. (2018) studied 1,572 adults living in Southern Italy, aiming to assess the association between habitual dietary intake of total polyphenols, their classes, subclasses, and individual compounds with depressive symptoms among participants of the Mediterranean Healthy Eating, Lifestyle and Ageing (MEAL) study. Food frequency questionnaires, Phenol-Explorer, and […]
